India Leads Global Mobile Gaming Growth with 2 Billion Downloads

mobile game downloads hit 2 billion in Q2 2026, up 14.2% quarter-on-quarter against a 4.2% global decline, per Sensor Tower data reported by Indian Television. Mobile gaming revenue crossed $106 million, +3.7% QoQ while worldwide revenue fell 6.2%. India is now the world's largest mobile game acquisition market — and one of the fastest-growing monetisation markets to match.

The Top of the Charts

Ludo King held first place, closing on 1 billion cumulative Indian downloads and expected to cross the mark in Q3 2026. Slots two through four went to minimalist puzzle titles — Arrow Puzzle, Arrows Puzzle Escape, Arrows GO! — which generated more than 11% of their global advertising revenue from India across the 19 markets Sensor Tower tracks. Ad-led monetisation scales here in a way it doesn't elsewhere.

Mid-core still leads revenue. Casual sits second. Hypercasual missed the top 10 earners list but posted more than 180% QoQ revenue growth. The segment mix is maturing, not stalling.

The Movers That Matter

eFootball rode 2026 FIFA World Cup hype to a 214% year-on-year jump in downloads and nearly 29% revenue growth, breaking into India's top five highest-grossing games. Kingshot, a 4X strategy title that landed in India in 2025, saw revenue climb more than 13-fold. The top four highest-grossers held their year-ago positions. Franchise resilience shows up cleanly in the data.

80 Level's reporting puts BGMI as India's highest-grossing game, with paying users up 27% YoY in 2025. India counts 550 million gamers and 175 million paying for in-game content. Median age sits at 29. Ninety-six percent play on mobile. Five of the top ten downloaded titles ship from Indian publishers now.

What This Means for the Scene

Annual revenue per paying user in India is $27. Japan sits above $500. The gap is wide, but paying users are multiplying fast — some segments have grown ninefold since 2020. The competitive infrastructure exists: Sony's India Hero Project backs 78 studios, Krafton's incubator runs around 15. The IP pipeline is feeding.

Verdict for the ecosystem: this isn't a pre-revenue market waiting to be converted. It is already spending, and the numbers prove it. While broader Indian equities face scrutiny — Trent shed $1.56 billion in market value over revenue miss concerns — mobile gaming posted a record quarter. Two different economies, same window.
