From Grassroots Creators to Global Esports Icons: The Indian Gaming Evolution

The Esports World Cup Foundation wrapped its 2026 Paris edition with numbers that read more like a sovereign-wealth-fund prospectus than a tournament recap.

From Grassroots Creators to Global Esports Icons: The Indian Gaming Evolution

AG.AL took the Club Championship on 5,300 points and walked off with a $7 million grand prize from a $75 million pool spread across 25 tournaments. Behind those figures sits a clearer signal: Saudi-backed organizers have identified India's creator-driven audience as the next growth vector, and the courtship is already underway.

The Paris Numbers, Decoded

Riyadh-based Esports Foundation ran a seven-week season that pulled 850 million viewers, 440 million hours of watch time and 175,000 ticketed attendees across 24 game titles. Over 2,000 players from 100+ countries represented 200 clubs. Team Falcons finished second at 4,600 points, with Team Vitality, Natus Vincere and Team Liquid trailing. The Club Championship was decided on the final weekend when AG.AL's Gwendal "Gwen" Duparc won the EWC's inaugural Trackmania tournament to overturn Falcons' lead, sealing both the $130,000 event title and the overall crown. AG.AL also banked results across Tekken 8, Chess, Free Fire, Honor of Kings and Teamfight Tactics — a portfolio spread that reflects how clubs now treat esports as a multi-vertical investment rather than a single-franchise bet. The collective only began its global push in 2024.

India's Creator Pipeline Is the Real Story

The Middle East wants Indian eyeballs because Indian creators spent a decade building them without franchise money. Naman Mathur — better known as Mortal — uploaded Mini Militia gameplay in 2016 before pivoting to PUBG Mobile in 2018, tying his channel growth to Team SouL's competitive run. Aaditya Sawant (Dynamo Gaming) had been uploading since the early 2010s across Counter-Strike, Dota and Battlefield before PUBG Mobile gave him the "Patt se headshot" moment that turned him into a household name. Total Gaming launched in 2018 and migrated to Free Fire after PUBG Mobile's storage demands outpaced his device. Ujjwal Chaurasia (Techno Gamerz) took a different lane entirely, building around PC and story-driven titles like GTA, reaching 18 million YouTube followers by 2021. None of these channels were seeded by franchise capital — they were audience capture executed over years, often on consumer hardware.

The Sustainability Question

The Esports World Cup returns to Riyadh in 2027, and Saudi organizers have every reason to court a market that has crossed a billion dollars in size and counts 500 million-plus gamers. AG.AL's chief operating officer Eddy Chen described the Club Championship win as a historic milestone for the collective, but the broader strategic calculus is simpler: Gulf ambitions and India's creator-driven pipeline are converging because the alternative is a saturated Western audience and a Chinese market that remains structurally difficult to access. The risk for India's ecosystem is familiar — local monetization has never matched the viewership numbers those creators generated, and tournament prize pools do not fix the underlying gap between audience capture and revenue capture. If the 2027 edition wants to convert Indian viewership into recurring ecosystem value rather than a one-off spike, the ROI conversation has to move past vanity metrics and into unit economics that actually work for the Indian market.
